This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicts a quiet interior scene at Shono, one of the fifty-three stations along the Tokaido road. Unlike the more famous landscape series by Utagawa Hiroshige, which focuses on the external environment and weather conditions of the route, Hokusai here directs his attention to the domestic activities within a roadside inn. Two women are shown in a sparsely furnished room, illuminated by a tall, rectangular andon lamp. One woman sits near the lamp, her form partially obscured by the light fixture, while the other focuses on her needlework.
The composition is defined by clean lines and a restrained use of colour. Hokusai employs a muted palette, typical of early nineteenth-century surimono or smaller print series, which allows the viewer to focus on the subtle interactions between the figures and their immediate surroundings. Katsushika Hokusai
