Hiroshige captures a sudden downpour at the forty-fifth station, Shono, where travellers scramble up a steep slope to find shelter.

The composition relies on diagonal lines to convey the force of the rain. The bamboo grove in the background bends under the wind, while the figures in the foreground lean forward, their bodies angled against the elements. Hiroshige employs a technique known as bokashi, or colour gradation, to create the atmospheric effect of the storm. The sky transitions from a dark, heavy grey at the top to a lighter tone, suggesting the density of the falling water.
