Shono: Ancient Site of the Shiratori Mound - Utagawa Hiroshige

This woodblock print is the forty-sixth entry in the series Famous Sights of the Fifty-three Stations, often referred to as the Vertical Tokaido. Produced by Utagawa Hiroshige in 1855, the work depicts a scene near Shono, a station on the route connecting Edo and Kyoto. The composition focuses on a group of porters carrying portable shrines or palanquins along a path framed by large, gnarled pine trees. The figures are rendered with a sense of movement, their light clothing contrasting with the deep blue tones of the foliage and the distant water.

Hiroshige employs a vertical format, which allows for a distinct layering of space. The foreground features the human activity, while the middle ground opens into a broad expanse of water and fields.
