It depicts a narrative scene from the Rukmini Mangal, a text detailing the marriage of Rukmini to Krishna. On the left, a solitary figure stands in a garden, providing a sense of scale and transition. The right side features an open pavilion, or baradari, where King Bhishmaka sits upon a cushioned dais. He is engaged in a heated discussion with Shishupala, who gestures emphatically while seated before him. The figures are rendered in profile, a characteristic convention of the period, with their status indicated by their elaborate turbans, jewellery, and fine garments.
