A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige, depicting travellers crossing the Oi River on the historic Tokaido road.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts the crossing of the Oi River at Shimada, a station on the Tokaido road. The scene captures the physical difficulty of travel during the Edo period, as travellers are carried across the water on platforms supported by teams of porters. The Oi River was notoriously difficult to bridge, necessitating this manual method of transport for those journeying between Kyoto and Edo.
Hiroshige employs a clear, horizontal composition to organise the activity. In the foreground, the water is rendered with rhythmic, repeating lines that suggest movement and depth. The porters are shown in various states of exertion, their forms simplified yet expressive. Beyond the river, a line of trees marks the far bank, while the distant mountains provide a backdrop for the scene. The inclusion of a faint, triangular peak suggests the presence of Mount Fuji, a common motif in Hiroshige's work that anchors the viewer within the Japanese geography.
This print belongs to the Reisho Tokaido series, so named for the use of clerical script (reisho) in the cartouches. The palette is controlled, relying on shades of blue for the water and muted earth tones for the riverbanks and mountains. The sky transitions from a pale yellow to a soft white, suggesting the light of early morning or late afternoon. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the Ukiyo-e tradition, where the collaborative process between artist, carver, and printer resulted in a balanced, atmospheric image. The work provides a glimpse into the daily life and logistical realities of the Tokaido route, documenting a specific moment of transit that was familiar to many travellers of the time.
