A study of seashells by Russian artist Boris Kustodiev, painted in 1912. This still life captures the organic textures and light on natural forms.
Boris Kustodiev, a painter associated with the World of Art group, is often recognised for his depictions of Russian provincial life and festive scenes. This still life, dated 1912, demonstrates a different facet of his practice. The composition focuses on a collection of seashells arranged against a dark, textured background.
Kustodiev employs a controlled palette dominated by deep forest greens and shadows, which allows the pearlescent surfaces of the shells to emerge. The artist uses light to define the curvature and volume of the objects, particularly the large, smooth nautilus-like form that occupies the right side of the frame. The brushwork is deliberate, capturing the contrast between the matte, dark surroundings and the reflective, organic textures of the shells.
Unlike his more expansive narrative works, this piece functions as a study of form and light. The arrangement is compact, drawing the viewer into the physical properties of the objects. The inclusion of a smaller, patterned shell at the base adds a point of detail that breaks the uniformity of the larger forms. This work reflects the artist's technical training and his ability to apply academic rigour to domestic subjects. It remains a quiet example of his versatility, moving away from the theatricality of his larger canvases to explore the tactile nature of natural objects. The painting is signed and dated in the upper right corner, consistent with his output during this period of his career.
