A striking graphic illustration by Heorhiy Narbut, featuring a windmill and classical motifs from his 1917 Ukrainian Alphabet series.
Heorhiy Narbut was a central figure in the development of Ukrainian graphic design during the early twentieth century. This work, a plate from his unfinished 'Ukrainian Alphabet' project, demonstrates his mastery of silhouette and line. The composition balances traditional rural motifs with a refined, almost architectural precision. A wooden windmill stands to the left, its sails caught in a gust that scatters leaves across the frame. To the right, a gnarled tree trunk provides a vertical counterpoint to the structure, while a classical urn rests upon a stone plinth.
Narbut utilised a high-contrast aesthetic, relying on the interplay between solid black ink and the white of the paper. His approach to typography and illustration draws from diverse sources, including Baroque engravings, heraldry, and folk art. The letter 'B' (representing the Cyrillic 'V' or 'Ve' in the Ukrainian alphabet) is rendered with a decorative, wheat-sheaf texture, contrasting with the stark, modern serif of the Latin 'B' placed alongside it. This juxtaposition reflects the artist's interest in the intersection of historical tradition and contemporary design.
The work is contained within a clean, rectangular border, a hallmark of Narbut's disciplined approach to page layout. Every element, from the texture of the wooden planks on the mill to the delicate rendering of the foliage, is executed with a focus on clarity and form. This piece offers a glimpse into the aesthetic programme of the Ukrainian State Academy of Arts, where Narbut served as rector. His work remains a primary reference for those interested in the synthesis of national identity and modernist graphic principles. The print captures the precision of his original ink drawings, maintaining the sharp edges and tonal depth of the source material.
