A refined graphic illustration by Heorhiy Narbut from his 1917 Ukrainian Alphabet series, featuring precise ink work and historical motifs.
This graphic work by Heorhiy Narbut forms part of his celebrated 'Ukrainian Alphabet', a project that synthesises traditional heraldic motifs with early twentieth-century modernist design. Narbut, a central figure in the development of Ukrainian graphic art, utilised his deep knowledge of historical typography and baroque ornamentation to create this series. The composition is divided into a narrative illustration and a typographic section.
The upper portion depicts a donkey leaping over a wooden fence, set against a backdrop of a sparse, wintery field. To the left, a tree serves as a rack for various historical weapons, a recurring motif in Narbut's work that references the Cossack heritage of Ukraine. The line work is precise and controlled, demonstrating the artist's mastery of the silhouette and his ability to balance negative space with detailed ink strokes.
Below the illustration, the letter 'O' is presented in multiple forms: as a large, bold serif character, a smaller decorative wreath, and in various typefaces. The text lists words beginning with the letter in Ukrainian, including 'osel' (donkey), 'oruzhzhia' (weapons), and 'ohorozha' (fence). This integration of text and image reflects the artist's background in book design and his aim to elevate the alphabet into a cohesive visual experience. The work avoids unnecessary ornamentation, focusing instead on the clarity of the line and the structural integrity of the letterforms. It remains a significant example of the graphic arts produced in Kyiv during a period of intense cultural activity. The print captures the clean, disciplined aesthetic that defined Narbut's approach to national identity through design, offering a clear view of his technical skill and his ability to merge historical references with a contemporary graphic sensibility.
