A classic Ukiyo-e triptych by Ishikawa Toyonobu featuring couples sharing umbrellas beneath spring blossoms, rendered in the traditional benizuri-e style.
This triptych by Ishikawa Toyonobu, titled Aigasa sanpukutsui, depicts pairs of figures sharing umbrellas beneath flowering trees. Toyonobu was a prominent figure in the mid-eighteenth-century Ukiyo-e tradition, known for his work in the benizuri-e style, which utilised a limited palette of pink and green pigments alongside black ink. The composition is divided into three distinct panels, each featuring a couple sheltered by a large, circular umbrella. The figures are rendered with the elongated proportions characteristic of the period, their kimonos decorated with geometric patterns that contrast with the organic forms of the blossoming branches above.
The work captures a moment of intimacy and seasonal transition. The inclusion of plum and cherry blossoms suggests the arrival of spring, a common theme in Japanese art that links human activity to the natural cycle. The calligraphic inscriptions integrated into the composition provide context and poetic commentary, typical of the era's print culture. Toyonobu's use of line is precise, defining the folds of the garments and the delicate features of the subjects with clarity. The balanced arrangement across the three sheets creates a sense of harmony, while the repetition of the umbrella motif provides a visual rhythm that guides the eye across the entire piece. This print offers a clear view into the aesthetic preferences of the Edo period, where the depiction of fashionable urbanites in seasonal settings was a primary subject for woodblock artists. The muted colour scheme, achieved through the benizuri-e technique, lends the work a soft, atmospheric quality that remains distinct from the later, more saturated full-colour nishiki-e prints.
