A detailed depiction of fishermen hauling nets on the Delaware River, painted by Thomas Eakins in 1881.
Thomas Eakins, a central figure in American Realism, produced this work in 1881. It depicts the daily labour of shad fishermen along the Delaware River near Gloucester, New Jersey. Eakins was known for his rigorous approach to observation, often employing photography and mathematical perspective to ensure accuracy in his compositions. This painting captures the physical exertion of the men as they haul their nets onto the shore, a process that was a common sight in the region during the late nineteenth century.
The composition is organised around the horizontal sweep of the riverbank and the rhythmic placement of the figures. Eakins focuses on the mechanics of the task, showing the men in their yellow oilskin coats, which provide a visual contrast against the muted tones of the water and the sandy bank. The artist avoids idealising the scene, choosing instead to present the work as a factual record of a specific trade. The light is consistent with a clear day, casting soft shadows and defining the forms of the boats and the figures with precision.
Eakins had a personal connection to the Delaware River, having spent time rowing and observing the local maritime activities. This familiarity informs the painting, as he captures the weight of the nets and the posture of the men with a sense of authenticity. The work remains a primary example of his interest in the intersection of human activity and the natural environment. By documenting the specific techniques of the fishermen, Eakins provides a window into the industrial and social history of the Philadelphia area during this period. The painting is held in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where it is recognised for its technical execution and its honest portrayal of working life.
