Gino Severini, a central figure in the Italian Futurist movement, produced this self-portrait during his time in Paris. The work demonstrates his engagement with the analytical methods of Cubism, which he adapted to capture the Futurist interest in motion, simultaneity, and the fragmentation of form. Unlike the static portraits of the nineteenth century, this image presents the artist through a series of intersecting planes and geometric facets.

The composition relies on the overlapping of visual information, suggesting the subject is seen from multiple angles at once. Severini employs a palette of cool blues, whites, and earthy ochres to define the structure of his face and attire.
