A woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting the quiet, pre-dawn departure of a travelling party from a main camp in Seki.
This woodblock print is part of the celebrated series, Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido, published by Hoeido. The scene depicts the quiet, pre-dawn atmosphere at a main camp (honjin) in Seki. Hiroshige captures the specific tension of an early departure, where attendants prepare for a high-ranking official's journey. The composition is structured around the architectural elements of the inn, with large, circular family crests adorning the white curtains that enclose the courtyard.
In the foreground, figures are engaged in the final preparations for the day. One man adjusts his load, while others bow in deference to the departing party. The use of a muted, nocturnal palette creates a sense of stillness, contrasting with the precise, thin lines that define the bamboo poles, lanterns, and the structural beams of the building. The sky is rendered with a subtle gradation, suggesting the very first light of morning before the sun has fully risen.
Hiroshige demonstrates his mastery of atmospheric perspective here. The scene is not merely a record of a location, but a study of human activity within a specific social hierarchy. The arrangement of the figures, combined with the geometric patterns of the banners, provides a sense of order and discipline. This print remains a fine example of the artist's ability to imbue a travel scene with narrative detail and quiet observation. The technical execution of the woodblock carving, particularly in the fine lines of the banners and the subtle shading of the ground, reflects the high standards of the Hoeido edition.
