Beschreibung
A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige, capturing a rain-swept view of the Seidō temple and Kanda River in Edo.
This woodblock print is part of the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, produced by Utagawa Hiroshige during the final years of his career. The composition depicts the Seidō, or Confucian Temple, viewed from the vantage point of the Shōhei Bridge. Hiroshige employs a steep, diagonal embankment to guide the viewer's eye toward the Kanda River, where small boats navigate the water.
The scene is defined by a sudden rainstorm, rendered through fine, vertical lines that streak across the sky and the river surface. This technique creates a sense of atmosphere and movement, a hallmark of Hiroshige's later work. The contrast between the muted, cool tones of the rain-drenched sky and the lush green of the embankment provides a clear sense of depth. Figures with umbrellas and straw capes traverse the path above the temple grounds, adding a human element to the quiet, wet environment.
Technically, the print demonstrates the sophisticated use of the bokashi technique, where ink is wiped or layered to create gradients of colour, particularly visible in the sky and the water. The inclusion of the red cartouches, containing the series title and the specific location, follows the standard conventions of the Ukiyo-e genre. This work captures a specific moment in Edo, reflecting the artist's ability to transform everyday urban scenes into composed, atmospheric images. The print remains a representative example of the technical skill involved in mid-nineteenth-century Japanese woodblock production, where multiple blocks were carved to achieve the final colour composition.
