Egon Schiele produced this study in 1913, a period during which his draughtsmanship reached a high level of technical precision. The work displays his characteristic approach to the human form, where the body is treated as a series of angular, expressive lines rather than a soft, rounded volume. The figure is positioned in a hunched, seated posture, with her back turned towards the viewer, creating a sense of psychological withdrawal.
Schiele employs a sparse, economical use of colour. The pale, unmodulated skin tones of the subject contrast with the bold, flat application of red pigment on the fabric behind her.
