A classical allegorical drawing by Hendrik van Limborch depicting the personification of Truth, Veritas, seated upon a globe with a sun and book.
This drawing by Hendrik van Limborch depicts a female figure seated upon a globe, representing the personification of Truth, or Veritas. The artist employs a classical approach to the human form, characteristic of the late Dutch Golden Age. The figure holds a sun aloft in her right hand, symbolising the light of truth, while an open book rests upon her lap. A small putto is positioned to her left, adding a sense of movement to the composition.
The technique relies on delicate ink lines and subtle grey washes to define the contours of the body and the folds of the drapery. Van Limborch uses stippling to create shadow and depth, particularly along the limbs of the central figure. The background remains sparse, focusing the viewer on the symbolic elements of the sun, the globe, and the text. The inscription at the base, 'nudaque Veritas', confirms the allegorical nature of the subject, referencing the classical tradition of Truth as a naked figure.
Van Limborch was a pupil of Adriaen van der Werff, and this influence is visible in the smooth, idealised treatment of the skin and the balanced, academic arrangement of the figures. The work reflects the period's interest in classical iconography and the use of allegorical figures to convey moral or philosophical concepts. The composition is contained and orderly, typical of the formal training provided to artists in the Netherlands during the early eighteenth century. This print captures the precision of the original ink work, preserving the tonal variations of the wash and the clarity of the line. It offers a clear example of the academic drawing style that persisted in Dutch art long after the height of the seventeenth-century masters.
