Alfred Wallis, a former Cornish fisherman and scrap merchant, began painting in his late sixties. He worked primarily on salvaged cardboard, often cutting the material into irregular shapes to suit his compositions. This piece displays his characteristic approach to maritime subjects, where perspective is flattened and objects are sized according to their importance rather than their distance from the viewer.

The composition features several sailing vessels navigating choppy waters. Wallis used a limited palette, relying on black, white, grey, and muted green tones to define the sea and the coastal backdrop. His brushwork is direct and unrefined, reflecting his lack of formal training. The ships, with their dark, angular sails, appear as silhouettes against the textured, swirling water. The upper portion of the work includes a simplified representation of buildings and land, rendered with the same economy of form found in his depictions of boats.

Wallis painted from memory, drawing upon his years spent at sea. His work avoids the conventions of academic marine painting, opting instead for a raw, honest depiction of the Cornish coast. The surface of the cardboard remains visible in areas, adding to the tactile quality of the image. This print captures the authentic, unpretentious nature of his output, which later gained recognition from members of the St Ives group, including Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood. It remains a clear example of his ability to convey the essence of maritime life through simple, bold shapes and a restricted range of colour.
