A six-panel folding screen featuring fluid, expressive calligraphy by the Zen monk Ryōkan Taigu, set against a luminous gold-leaf background.
Ryōkan Taigu, a Sōtō Zen monk, poet, and calligrapher, remains one of the most respected figures in Japanese literary history. Living as a hermit in the mountains of Niigata, he rejected the rigid formalities of his time. His calligraphy reflects this detachment from worldly ambition, favouring a style that appears spontaneous, unrefined, and deeply personal.
This work features six panels of calligraphy set against a gold-leaf background. The contrast between the stark, black ink and the metallic surface creates a visual tension. Ryōkan's brushwork is fluid and rhythmic, showing a mastery of the medium that allows for varied line weight and speed. The characters, written in a cursive script, flow across the paper with a sense of ease that belies the technical control required to execute such forms.
Unlike the highly structured calligraphy often found in formal court settings, Ryōkan's approach is characterised by a lack of artifice. He often wrote in a manner that prioritised the emotional resonance of the poem over strict adherence to traditional stroke order or balance. The poems themselves, written in Chinese, reflect his engagement with classical literature and his own philosophical outlook.
By mounting these scrolls on a gold-leaf screen, the work bridges the gap between private, meditative practice and public, decorative display. The gold provides a luminous frame for the ink, which remains the primary focus. This piece offers a glimpse into the life of a man who sought enlightenment through the simple act of writing. It is a study in balance, where the weight of the ink is offset by the expansive, reflective space of the gold panels. The work invites quiet observation, mirroring the meditative state in which it was likely produced.
