A fine art print of an early Edo period Japanese folding screen, featuring two dancers against a gold leaf background.
This work, known as Bugi zu byōbu, originates from the early Edo period in Japan. It depicts two figures engaged in traditional dance, each holding a folding fan. The composition is structured around two vertical panels, framed by a distinctive checkerboard border that contrasts with the central figures. The background utilises gold leaf, a common technique in Japanese screen painting to reflect light and create a sense of depth within interior spaces.
The dancers wear garments decorated with geometric patterns, including stripes and diamond motifs. Their postures are stylised, reflecting the conventions of early seventeenth-century figure painting. The use of gold leaf behind the figures provides a neutral yet luminous setting, allowing the colours of the kimonos to remain the primary focus. The checkerboard border, or ichimatsu pattern, adds a rhythmic quality to the overall design, balancing the fluidity of the dancers with rigid, repeating geometry.
Such screens were functional objects, used to divide rooms or provide privacy in the homes of the elite. The choice of subject matter, specifically dancers, suggests a connection to the performing arts popular during this era. The painting style avoids excessive shading, favouring clear outlines and flat areas of colour. This approach is characteristic of the period, where decorative effect and clarity of form were prioritised. The preservation of the gold leaf and the pigments allows for a clear view of the original aesthetic intent, offering a glimpse into the visual culture of the early Edo period. This print captures the balance between the decorative border and the central figurative elements, maintaining the proportions of the original screen format.
