Ikeda Shōen was a prominent female artist during the Meiji and Taishō periods, known for her contributions to the bijin-ga genre, which focuses on the depiction of beautiful women. This woodblock print, titled Schoolgirls Homeward Bound, originates from the series Young Beauties in Layered Mists (Yaegasumi). It captures a quiet moment of transition as three young women, dressed in the traditional hakama skirts and kimonos typical of Meiji-era students, walk through a misty, atmospheric setting.

The composition employs a soft, muted colour palette to evoke the feeling of twilight or early morning. The mist is rendered with subtle gradients, creating a sense of depth that separates the figures from the distant, silhouetted trees. Shōen demonstrates a keen eye for textile detail, as seen in the varied patterns of the students' garments, ranging from bold stripes to delicate floral motifs.
