This work is a detail from the fresco cycle located within the Chapel of Nicholas V in the Vatican Apostolic Palace. Fra Angelico, a Dominican friar and painter, executed these murals between 1447 and 1449. The composition depicts episodes from the lives of Saint Lawrence and Saint Stephen, two early Christian martyrs.

The upper register shows Saint Stephen preaching and distributing alms, while the lower register focuses on the life of Saint Lawrence. Fra Angelico employs a clear, architectural framework to organise the narrative sequences. The figures are rendered with a sense of gravity and calm, characteristic of the artist's approach to religious subject matter. The use of perspective creates a defined space for the figures, allowing the viewer to follow the chronological progression of the events depicted.
