An eighteenth-century etching and engraving depicting a scene from Voltaire's opera, Pandore, designed by Hubert-François Gravelot and executed by Tilliard and Saint-Aubin.
This fine etching and engraving depicts a dramatic moment from Voltaire's opera, Pandore. The composition is based on a design by Hubert-François Gravelot, a figure known for his contributions to French book illustration during the eighteenth century. The print captures the mythological narrative where Prometheus brings fire to animate Pandora, a scene rendered with the technical precision characteristic of the period.
The work displays the collaborative nature of printmaking in the Enlightenment era. The inscription notes that the etching was executed by Augustin de Saint-Aubin, while the final burin work was completed by Jean Baptiste Tilliard. This division of labour allowed for a high degree of finish, seen in the delicate cross-hatching of the foliage and the subtle modelling of the figures. The scene is framed by a classical setting, with the central figure of Prometheus holding a torch aloft, his posture conveying a sense of urgency and divine intervention. The recumbent figure of Pandora, still in a state of transition, occupies the foreground, while secondary figures observe from the periphery.
Technically, the print demonstrates the mastery of line and tone achieved by French engravers of the time. The use of varied line weights creates a sense of depth, drawing the eye from the foreground figures to the atmospheric background. The inclusion of the French text, 'Que cette flamme pure / Te mette au nombre des vivans', provides the specific context of the second act of the opera. This piece offers a glimpse into the intersection of literature, music, and visual art in eighteenth-century France, reflecting the period's fascination with classical themes and theatrical spectacle. The print is presented on paper that retains the character of its original production, making it a representative example of the era's graphic output.
