This woodblock print by Torii Kiyohiro depicts a scene from the kabuki play Keisei Kaneni Sakura. As a member of the Torii school, Kiyohiro produced work heavily influenced by the theatrical traditions of the Edo period. The Torii school held a monopoly on the production of kabuki signage and promotional prints, which explains the focus on dramatic characterisation and costume detail seen here.
The composition features two figures positioned beneath a flowering cherry tree. The standing figure plays a flute, while the seated figure looks upward. The print is a benizuri-e, a style of early colour printing that utilised a limited palette of pink and green pigments applied to a base of black ink. This technique provides a subtle tonal range, allowing the patterns on the kimonos to remain legible without overwhelming the viewer. The lines are firm and calligraphic, characteristic of the Torii style, which prioritised the clear depiction of actors and their specific roles over realistic anatomical proportions.
Kiyohiro was active during the mid-eighteenth century, a period when ukiyo-e artists began experimenting with multi-colour printing. The figures wear elaborate garments decorated with geometric and floral motifs, reflecting the fashion of the time. The cherry blossoms hanging from the branches above serve as a seasonal marker, a common trope in Japanese theatre to establish the mood of a scene. The print captures the stylised gestures of the kabuki stage, where movement and posture communicate the emotional state of the characters. The artist's signature appears on the lower left, confirming the attribution to the Torii school. This work offers a glimpse into the visual culture of Edo-period Japan, where the theatre and the print market were closely linked.
