A detailed botanical study of a Scarlet Flesh Romana Melon from George Brookshaw's Pomona Britannica, featuring precise hand-coloured engraving.
This print originates from George Brookshaw's celebrated work, Pomona Britannica, published in London between 1804 and 1812. Brookshaw, originally a cabinet maker and painter of japanned furniture, turned his attention to botanical subjects with a focus on the fruit grown in the royal gardens at Kensington and Hampton Court. This specific plate, number 64, depicts the Scarlet Flesh Romana Melon with scientific precision and artistic flair.
The composition features the melon resting upon a stone plinth, set against a dark, atmospheric background. This choice of backdrop serves to draw the eye toward the textures of the fruit, from the netted, rough skin to the exposed, soft interior. The vine, complete with curling tendrils and delicate yellow blossoms, arches gracefully above the melon, providing a sense of natural growth and movement. Brookshaw employed a combination of aquatint and stipple engraving, a technique that allowed for subtle gradations of tone and colour. The hand-applied pigments bring a lifelike quality to the subject, capturing the specific hues of the melon's rind and the warmth of its flesh.
Pomona Britannica remains a significant record of horticultural history during the Regency period. It documents varieties of fruit that were prized by the aristocracy and cultivated with great care in glasshouses. Brookshaw's work bridges the gap between purely scientific documentation and decorative art, as he aimed to produce images that were both accurate and aesthetically pleasing for the collectors of his time. The clarity of the lines and the balanced arrangement of the plant elements demonstrate the technical skill required to produce such high-quality prints in the early nineteenth century. This piece offers a glimpse into the botanical interests of the era, presented with the refined sensibility characteristic of British printmaking from this period.
