Honoré-Victorin Daumier, a central figure in nineteenth-century French art, is widely recognised for his biting social commentary and his mastery of caricature. While he is often associated with his prolific output of lithographs for journals such as Le Charivari, his work in oil reveals a different facet of his practice. In this study of the character Scapin, Daumier demonstrates his ability to capture psychological depth through rapid, expressive brushwork.

Scapin, the cunning valet from Molière's plays, is rendered here with a focus on the actor's facial expression rather than precise anatomical detail. The paint application is thick and immediate, reflecting the artist's interest in the materiality of the medium. Daumier uses a muted palette of earth tones, punctuated by subtle shifts in light that define the contours of the face. The subject's gaze, directed upwards and away from the viewer, suggests a moment of contemplation or perhaps the anticipation of a scheme.
