Beschreibung
A classic woodblock print from Hiroshige's One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, capturing the Sanjusangendō Hall in Fukagawa with precise architectural detail.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige is part of the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. It depicts the Sanjusangendō Hall located in the Fukagawa district of Edo, which is modern-day Tokyo. The composition utilises a high vantage point, a common technique in Hiroshige's later works, to provide a clear view of the long, low-slung architecture of the hall. The structure is defined by its repetitive, rhythmic wooden slats and a long, dark roof that cuts diagonally across the frame, creating a sense of depth and scale.
In the foreground, small figures walk along the path, providing a sense of human proportion against the architectural mass. Beyond the hall, the scene opens to a view of the water, where several boats are visible. The sky is rendered with a subtle gradient, a hallmark of the high-quality printing techniques employed during the Edo period. The colour palette is restrained, relying on earthy tones for the ground and structures, contrasted with the deep blues of the water and the muted sky.
Hiroshige was a master of the Ukiyo-e genre, and this series represents his final major project. He captured the changing seasons and the daily life of the city with precision. The Sanjusangendō Hall in Fukagawa was a well-known site, and this print documents its appearance before the rapid urbanisation of the Meiji era. The work demonstrates the artist's ability to balance architectural geometry with the natural elements of the surrounding environment. It remains a primary visual record of the city's historical topography, offering a glimpse into the aesthetic sensibilities of nineteenth-century Japan.
