A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by William Faithorne the Elder, depicting the physician Samuel Collins within a formal oval cartouche.
This engraving by William Faithorne the Elder depicts Samuel Collins, a physician of the seventeenth century. Faithorne, a master of the burin, was one of the most capable printmakers working in London during the Restoration period. His technical precision allowed him to capture the textures of contemporary fashion, from the elaborate curls of the periwig to the fine lace of the cravat, with remarkable clarity.
The portrait is framed within a classical oval cartouche, a common device in seventeenth-century printmaking that provides a sense of architectural structure. Below the portrait, a coat of arms is displayed, adding a layer of heraldic detail that identifies the subject's social standing. The Latin inscription beneath the image, 'Samuelis Collins, Med: Dris Effigies', confirms his professional status as a Doctor of Medicine. The artist's signature, 'W. Faithorne ad vivum delin. et Sculp.', indicates that the print was created from a life study, a practice that ensured a high degree of likeness in portraiture of this era.
Faithorne's work is characterised by his use of cross-hatching to create volume and shadow. The light source is directed to illuminate the face of the sitter, drawing the viewer's attention to the expression and features of the physician. The surrounding frame, decorated with acanthus-like foliage, provides a decorative contrast to the sober, realistic treatment of the subject. This print serves as a record of the visual culture of the late seventeenth century, reflecting the period's interest in individual identity and the professionalisation of medicine. The composition is balanced and formal, adhering to the conventions of aristocratic and professional portraiture of the time. It remains a fine example of the high standard of English engraving during the late Stuart period.
