A detailed 1545 engraving by Hans Brosamer depicting the biblical betrayal of Samson by Delilah, executed with the precision of the German Little Masters.
This engraving by Hans Brosamer, dated 1545, depicts the biblical narrative of Samson and Delilah. The scene captures the moment of betrayal, with Delilah cutting the hair of the sleeping Samson while Philistine soldiers wait in the shadows to seize him. Brosamer, a German artist active in Fulda and Erfurt, was a skilled practitioner of the small-scale engraving technique common among the Kleinmeister, or Little Masters, of the sixteenth century.
The composition is organised within an interior space, featuring a table with domestic objects such as a flagon and a chalice, which contrast with the military presence of the armed men. The artist employs precise hatching and cross-hatching to define the textures of the armour, the fabric of the clothing, and the architectural elements of the room. The figures are rendered with a focus on anatomical clarity, typical of the period's interest in human form and narrative drama. A stone plinth in the foreground bears the artist's monogram and the date, confirming the work's origin during his mature period.
Brosamer's work reflects the technical rigour of German printmaking during the Reformation era. The print demonstrates a mastery of light and shadow, using the white of the paper to suggest volume and depth. The narrative is presented with directness, focusing on the psychological tension between the central figures. This piece provides a clear example of the graphic arts tradition in sixteenth-century Germany, where biblical stories were frequently adapted for a wider audience through the medium of the printed image. The attention to detail, from the soldiers' helmets to the specific items on the table, invites close inspection of the artist's technical process.
