A striking 1794 kabuki portrait by Tōshūsai Sharaku, capturing the actor Sakata Hangorō III in a moment of dramatic tension.
This woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku depicts the kabuki actor Sakata Hangorō III in the role of the villain Yahazu no Yadahei. Produced in 1794, the work belongs to a series of actor portraits that defined Sharaku's brief but active career in the Edo period. Unlike the idealised portrayals common in contemporary ukiyo-e, Sharaku employed a style of caricature that exaggerated the facial features and physical expressions of his subjects.
The composition focuses on the actor's posture, which conveys a sense of tension and theatrical menace. The figure is dressed in a dark red kimono, with the fabric folds rendered through bold, clean lines. The actor's hand grips the hilt of a sword, a detail that reinforces the character's aggressive nature. The background remains minimal, featuring only a suggestion of a rocky outcrop and a branch, which directs the viewer's attention entirely to the actor's performance.
Sharaku's use of colour is restrained, relying on a palette of muted reds, blacks, and soft tones to create contrast. The print captures a specific moment of dramatic intensity, typical of the kabuki stage. The artist's ability to convey the psychological state of the character through physical distortion remains a distinctive feature of his work. This print provides a clear example of the artist's approach to portraiture, where the goal was to capture the essence of the actor's stage persona rather than a realistic likeness. The work is a representative piece of the late eighteenth-century Japanese print tradition, reflecting the popular culture of the Edo period.
