This work is a detail from the fresco cycle within the Niccoline Chapel at the Vatican Palace. Fra Angelico, a Dominican friar, painted these scenes between 1447 and 1449 under the patronage of Pope Nicholas V. The composition depicts Saint Stephen engaged in a theological debate before the Sanhedrin, a scene that captures the tension between early Christian figures and the established authorities of the time.
