A dramatic seventeenth-century Spanish Baroque painting depicting Saint Michael the Archangel defeating the fallen figure of Satan.
Ignacio de Ries, a painter active in Seville during the mid-seventeenth century, produced this depiction of Saint Michael the Archangel. The composition follows traditional iconography, showing the archangel in a moment of triumph over the fallen figure of Satan. Saint Michael wears a plumed helmet and a breastplate, his posture dynamic as he pins the demon to the earth with his foot. He holds a palm frond in one hand and a flaming sword in the other, symbols of victory and divine authority.
The work displays the influence of the Sevillian school, particularly the tenebrist tendencies that defined the era. The background is a golden, atmospheric void, which contrasts with the figures in the foreground. The anatomy of the fallen figure is rendered with attention to muscular tension, while the archangel is depicted with a more idealised, youthful countenance. The drapery, particularly the flowing red fabric, adds a sense of movement to the scene. The use of light is calculated to draw the eye toward the central conflict, creating a clear hierarchy of forms within the frame.
De Ries was a follower of Francisco de Zurbarán, and this connection is visible in the clarity of the figures and the controlled application of paint. The work is part of a larger series of paintings created for the Hospital de la Caridad in Seville, where the artist contributed several pieces to the altarpieces. This specific image captures the dramatic tension characteristic of the Counter-Reformation period, where religious art aimed to communicate theological narratives through direct, emotive imagery. The preservation of the canvas allows for a clear view of the artist's brushwork and the specific colour palette, which relies on the juxtaposition of the deep blue armour against the warm, golden light of the celestial background.
