A fourteenth-century tempera panel by Pacino di Bonaguida, featuring narrative scenes of Saint John, the Madonna and Child, and the Death of the Virgin.
This panel by Pacino di Bonaguida, a Florentine painter active in the early fourteenth century, demonstrates the stylistic transition from the Byzantine tradition toward the narrative clarity of the Gothic period. The work is divided into distinct registers, a common format for devotional objects intended for private contemplation. The upper section features two scenes: Saint John on Patmos, depicted in a rocky, sparse setting, and the Madonna and Child Enthroned, flanked by saints. The lower register presents the Death of the Virgin, a complex composition involving a gathering of figures surrounding the bier, with Christ positioned centrally to receive the soul of the Virgin.
Pacino di Bonaguida is recognised for his contribution to the development of miniature painting and small-scale altarpieces in Florence. His approach to figure construction relies on clear outlines and a refined application of tempera, which allows for the delicate rendering of facial features and drapery folds. The use of gold leaf backgrounds, typical of the period, flattens the pictorial space, directing the viewer's attention to the symbolic weight of the figures rather than a realistic environment. The colour palette is dominated by muted earth tones, deep blues, and the characteristic warmth of gold, which unifies the disparate narrative scenes into a cohesive visual programme. The figures exhibit a degree of emotional restraint, yet the gestures and gazes are carefully orchestrated to guide the viewer through the theological sequence of the events. This work provides insight into the devotional practices of the Trecento, where such panels functioned as aids for prayer and meditation, offering a condensed visual summary of sacred history within a portable format.
