A dramatic woodcut by Giuseppe Scolari, depicting Saint Jerome in the wilderness with his lion, rendered in a distinctively expressive Mannerist style.
Giuseppe Scolari, an Italian artist active in the late sixteenth century, produced this woodcut depicting Saint Jerome. The composition captures the saint in a rugged, natural setting, accompanied by his traditional attribute, the lion. Scolari employs a dramatic approach to form, utilising bold, sweeping lines to define the musculature of the saint and the flowing mane of the beast. The treatment of light and shadow is particularly notable for the period, as the artist uses dense hatching to create a sense of volume and atmosphere within the print.
The figure of Saint Jerome is rendered with a sense of physical tension, his gaze directed toward the crucifix he holds. The surrounding environment, while stylised, provides a sense of isolation appropriate to the subject. Scolari was known for his technical skill in woodcut production, often pushing the medium to achieve effects typically associated with engraving or drawing. This work demonstrates his ability to manipulate the grain and surface of the wood block to produce varying line weights, which define the contours of the figures against the darker, more textured background.
This print reflects the broader stylistic tendencies of the late Renaissance and Mannerist periods, where artists prioritised expressive form and dynamic movement over strict naturalism. The exaggerated poses and the rhythmic quality of the lines contribute to the emotional weight of the scene. As a fine art print, this piece offers a clear view of Scolari's graphic technique, preserving the original energy of the woodcut process. It serves as an example of the sophisticated printmaking practices in Italy during this era, where the woodcut was elevated to a medium capable of conveying complex theological narratives through highly individualised artistic vision.
