This work by the Italian Baroque painter Domenichino depicts a foundational moment in the history of the Jesuit order. Saint Ignatius of Loyola, while travelling to Rome in 1537, experienced a vision at the chapel of La Storta. He saw Christ carrying the cross, accompanied by God the Father, who promised to be favourable to him in Rome. Domenichino captures this supernatural encounter with the clarity and compositional rigour characteristic of his style.

The painting is divided into two distinct registers. In the lower portion, Saint Ignatius kneels in prayer, his gaze directed upward toward the celestial manifestation. His dark, simple habit contrasts with the luminous, ethereal quality of the upper register. Here, Christ sits upon a cloud, bearing the cross, while God the Father gestures with an open hand, signifying divine approval. The figures are arranged with a sense of balance and order, avoiding the excessive theatricality found in some contemporary works of the period.

Domenichino, a pupil of Annibale Carracci, was known for his ability to combine classical restraint with the emotional intensity required by Counter-Reformation art. The background features a serene, open landscape that provides a sense of distance and atmosphere, grounding the miraculous event in a recognisable world.
