A detailed woodcut by Niccolo Boldrini, after a design by Titian, depicting the spiritual moment of Saint Francis receiving the stigmata in a dense forest.
This woodcut by Niccolo Boldrini depicts the moment Saint Francis of Assisi receives the stigmata. The composition is based on a design by Titian, reflecting the collaborative nature of printmaking in sixteenth-century Venice. Boldrini, a skilled woodcutter, translates the painterly qualities of Titian's original concept into the stark, graphic language of the relief print.
The scene is set within a dense, wooded environment. Saint Francis kneels in the foreground, his gaze directed upward toward a celestial light containing a crucifix. His posture conveys a sense of spiritual intensity. To the right, a companion figure lies on the ground, seemingly unaware of the miraculous event occurring above. The trees are rendered with heavy, rhythmic lines that define their gnarled trunks and foliage, creating a sense of physical weight and texture. In the distance, a small architectural structure is visible, providing a sense of scale and depth to the composition.
Boldrini employs a variety of hatching techniques to model the forms and suggest light and shadow. The contrast between the dark, dense forest and the illuminated sky directs the viewer's attention to the central narrative. The print demonstrates the technical proficiency required to carve such detail into a woodblock, maintaining the integrity of the original design while adapting it for the medium. This work is a representative example of the Venetian school of printmaking, where the interplay between drawing and carving allowed for the dissemination of complex compositions to a wider audience. The focus remains on the dramatic interaction between the saint and the divine, captured through the precise, controlled application of ink on paper.
