A late fifteenth-century engraving depicting the vision of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, rendered with precise architectural detail and Gothic stylistic elements.
This engraving by the anonymous Dutch printmaker known as Meester IAM van Zwoll depicts the visionary experience of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux. The composition follows the iconographic tradition of the lactatio Bernardi, where the Virgin Mary offers milk to the saint, symbolising his spiritual nourishment and devotion. The artist employs a rigorous system of hatching to define the architectural space, which is set within a late Gothic interior.
Saint Bernard occupies the foreground, his figure rendered with heavy drapery folds that suggest the weight of his monastic habit. He holds a crozier, a symbol of his ecclesiastical rank, while his posture conveys humility and awe. Opposite him, the Virgin sits upon an elevated throne, cradling the Christ Child. The surrounding space is filled with architectural details, including pointed arches and tiled floors, which provide a sense of depth and structure.
Small figures of angels appear in the upper register, adding a celestial dimension to the scene. A small lion, often associated with strength or vigilance, sits near the base of the throne. The print demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of late fifteenth-century Northern European engraving. The artist uses varied line weights to distinguish between the textures of stone, fabric, and skin. This work reflects the period's interest in combining theological narrative with domestic, observable reality. The inclusion of Latin inscriptions within the image further integrates the text into the visual field, a common practice in devotional prints of the era. The print remains a significant example of the graphic output from the Low Countries during the late medieval period, showing the influence of contemporary painting styles on the medium of engraving.
