A detailed 17th-century engraving by Boëtius Adamsz. Bolswert depicting Saint Anthony the Great reading amidst demonic temptations.
This engraving by Boëtius Adamsz. Bolswert depicts Saint Anthony the Great, the Egyptian ascetic, during his period of isolation in the desert. The composition focuses on the saint, who is seated and absorbed in reading a book, seemingly undisturbed by the surrounding supernatural figures. Bolswert employs precise line work to define the textures of the saint's robes, his long beard, and the grotesque features of the demons that crowd the frame.
To the left, a skeletal figure brandishes a rod, while a horned beast looms on the right. A pig, a traditional attribute of Saint Anthony, appears near his feet. The saint is surrounded by a radiant halo, which provides a stark contrast to the dark, chaotic environment of the wilderness. The Latin inscription at the base of the print offers a moral reflection on the saint's steadfastness in the face of temptation, noting that even when monsters harass him, his heart remains calm through his devotion to Jesus.
Bolswert was a master of the burin, and his technical skill is evident in the varied density of the cross-hatching used to create depth and shadow. This work reflects the seventeenth-century Dutch interest in religious subjects, often produced for devotional use or as part of larger series documenting the lives of saints. The print captures the tension between the spiritual focus of the hermit and the external forces of distraction. It is a fine example of the narrative engraving style common in the Netherlands during the early Baroque period, demonstrating the artist's ability to balance complex iconography with clear, readable form.
