A detailed lithograph depicting a draughtsman sketching the Gothic ruins of the Palace of the White Queen, from the 'Voyages pittoresques' series.
This lithograph originates from the ambitious publication 'Voyages pittoresques et romantiques dans l'ancienne France', a monumental project initiated by Baron Taylor and Charles Nodier in the 1820s. The series aimed to document the architectural heritage of France, capturing sites that were often in states of decay or neglect following the French Revolution. Alexandre-Evariste Fragonard, son of the famous Jean-Honoré Fragonard, contributed this specific view of the ruins associated with the legendary Palace of the White Queen.
The composition employs the classic Romantic trope of the artist in nature. A draughtsman sits in the foreground, sheltered by the dense foliage of a tree, as he records the crumbling Gothic archway before him. The contrast between the organic, shadowed foreground and the sun-drenched, weathered stone of the ruins creates a sense of temporal distance. The archway itself, with its pointed form and decorative masonry, is rendered with precision, reflecting the period's growing interest in medieval history and the preservation of national monuments.
Technically, the lithograph demonstrates the capacity of the medium to replicate the tonal range of wash drawings. The soft transitions in the sky and the textured shading on the stone walls provide a atmospheric quality that defines the Romantic aesthetic. By placing a human figure within the frame, Fragonard provides a sense of scale, while simultaneously inviting the viewer to participate in the act of observation. This work functions as both a historical record and a meditation on the passage of time, capturing the melancholic beauty of structures that have outlived their original purpose. It remains a fine example of early nineteenth-century printmaking, produced during a period when the study of antiquities became a central pursuit for French artists and intellectuals.
