A detailed 1822 etching by Jacobus Wijsman depicting the aftermath of the fire at the East India Company warehouse in Amsterdam.
This etching by Jacobus Wijsman documents the aftermath of a fire that destroyed the East India Company warehouse in Amsterdam. The event occurred on 15 April 1822, and the print captures the scene from the perspective of the Kleine Wittenburgerstraat. The composition focuses on the structural collapse of the warehouse complex, contrasting the remaining upright section of the building with the chaotic pile of debris and fallen roof structures in the foreground.
Wijsman employs a precise, linear technique characteristic of early nineteenth-century topographical documentation. The water in the foreground is rendered with calm, horizontal strokes, providing a quiet counterpoint to the destruction depicted on the bank. Small figures in rowing boats are positioned on the water, offering a sense of scale to the massive industrial ruins. The sky is filled with soft, etched clouds, typical of the period's interest in atmospheric conditions even within reportage-style imagery.
The print serves as a historical record of the Dutch maritime infrastructure during a period of transition. The East India Company warehouse, once a symbol of mercantile power, is shown here in a state of ruin. The artist includes a detailed inscription at the base, which provides the exact date and location of the event, adhering to the conventions of contemporary news prints. This work is a clear example of how artists of the era functioned as visual chroniclers, preserving the appearance of urban sites before, during, or after significant changes. The monochromatic palette emphasises the textures of the broken timber and masonry, allowing the viewer to focus on the architectural details of the site.
