A detailed watercolour and ink study of the rocky coastline at Boulogne-sur-Mer by Dutch marine artist Petrus Johannes Schotel.
Petrus Johannes Schotel, a Dutch painter active during the mid-nineteenth century, specialised in maritime subjects. This work, depicting the rocky coastline at Boulogne-sur-Mer, demonstrates his technical proficiency with watercolour and ink. The composition focuses on the interaction between the turbulent sea and the rugged cliff face, a common theme in the Romantic tradition of the period.
The artist employs a muted palette, relying on washes of grey, brown, and ochre to convey the atmospheric conditions of the French coast. The ink lines define the structure of the rocks and the motion of the waves, while the watercolour washes provide depth and texture to the sky and water. Schotel captures the movement of the surf as it breaks against the shore, using lighter tones to suggest the foam and spray. The perspective draws the eye along the coastline, creating a sense of scale and distance.
Schotel was part of a family of marine artists, and his work often reflects a close observation of nautical and coastal environments. His approach to this scene is observational, prioritising the physical qualities of the terrain and the shifting light over dramatic exaggeration. The work remains a clear example of the maritime studies produced by Dutch artists who travelled to the French coast during the nineteenth century. The paper shows signs of age, which adds to the historical character of the piece, while the composition remains balanced and focused on the natural elements of the scene.
