Beschreibung
A detailed botanical study of a screw pine fruit and sandalwood sprig by the Victorian explorer and painter Marianne North.
Marianne North was a prolific Victorian traveller and painter who dedicated her life to documenting the flora of the world. This work depicts the fruit of the screw pine, or Pandanus, alongside a sprig of sandalwood. North painted these specimens during her extensive travels, often working in situ to capture the specific characteristics of plants that were then largely unknown to European audiences.
The composition focuses on the textural qualities of the screw pine fruit. North employs a direct, observational approach, prioritising the accurate rendering of the segmented, bright orange-red drupes. The dark, muted background provides a contrast that allows the saturated colours of the fruit to emerge. Behind the primary subject, the sandalwood sprig is rendered with a lighter touch, providing a sense of scale and botanical context.
Unlike many of her contemporaries who produced stylised or decorative floral art, North maintained a focus on scientific observation. Her work was intended to provide a visual record of plant life as it appeared in its natural habitat. She famously funded and designed her own gallery at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, where she installed over 800 of her paintings. This specific piece reflects her ability to balance the demands of botanical accuracy with a clear, painterly execution. The lighting is consistent and even, avoiding dramatic shadows to ensure the form of the fruit remains the primary subject for the viewer. Her technique, using oil on board, allowed for a durable finish that has preserved the clarity of her observations for over a century.

Artist Biography
Marianne North
She was born in 1830 into a wealthy Norfolk family. Her father was an MP. She trained as a singer, but her voice failed and she turned to painting. She was devoted to her father and travelled with him until his death in 1869, which freed her to go further.
She painted plants in oils, not watercolours, and she painted them in situ within their habitats, including animals, people, and temples. In Borneo she painted a pitcher plant unknown to science, which was named Nepenthes northiana in her honour. Charles Darwin personally suggested she visit Australia. She completed 848 paintings in thirteen years, donated 832 to Kew Gardens, and paid for the gallery to house them herself. The Marianne North Gallery at Kew remains the only permanent solo exhibition in a major UK institution. She died in 1890.
