Rievaulx Terrace opens between walls of green woodland in North Yorkshire, where striped grass sweeps towards a small Ionic Temple beneath a blue sky filled with pale clouds.
Rievaulx Terrace was created in the 1750s for Thomas Duncombe II. The North Yorkshire garden occupies a ridge above the ruined abbey, with temple follies at either end of its grassy walk and woodland framing views into the valley.
Mowing stripes bend across the sunlit green, narrowing towards the little pale temple. Its columns stand against dark leaves, below a triangular pediment. Tall trees cast irregular shadows from the right, while the lower edge of woodland drops away on the left. Cream cloud banks stretch across the high blue expanse.
