Robert Delaunay produced Rhythm no. 1 in 1934, a period during which he moved away from his earlier figurative subjects to focus entirely on the mechanics of colour and circular form. Delaunay was a primary figure in the development of Orphism, a movement that prioritised the lyrical use of colour over the rigid structures of early Cubism.
