This work depicts the annual Venetian ceremony of the Marriage of the Sea, a tradition marking the city's maritime power. Canaletto captures the Bucentoro, the state barge of the Doge, returning to the Molo after the ritual casting of a gold ring into the Adriatic. The composition centres on the architectural grandeur of the Doge's Palace and the Campanile, rendered with the precise perspective that defined the artist's career.

Canaletto utilised a camera obscura to achieve the high degree of topographical accuracy seen in the stone textures and the rhythmic spacing of the columns. The water surface is animated by a multitude of gondolas and smaller vessels, each populated with figures that provide a sense of scale and daily activity. The light is clear and even, typical of the Venetian morning, allowing for a sharp definition of the Gothic arches and the ornate carvings of the state barge.

As a master of the veduta, or view painting, Canaletto produced these works primarily for the Grand Tourists visiting Italy.
