Simone Cantarini, a pupil of Guido Reni, produced this circular composition during the mid-seventeenth century. The work depicts the Holy Family during their journey to Egypt, a subject frequently explored by artists of the Bolognese school. The Virgin Mary sits centrally, holding the Christ Child, who reaches for an object offered to him. Saint Joseph rests nearby, his posture relaxed as he observes the scene. Two angels stand to the left, one gesturing upwards while the other holds a basket, adding a sense of divine presence to the quiet, pastoral setting.

Cantarini employs a clear, balanced arrangement typical of his training. The figures are rendered with smooth transitions and a refined application of paint. The colour palette relies on primary tones, with the Virgin's blue mantle and the warm ochre of Joseph's robes providing a visual anchor. The background features a soft, atmospheric view of distant hills, which recedes gently behind the primary group. The circular format, or tondo, requires a careful distribution of mass to maintain equilibrium, a challenge Cantarini meets by curving the figures to follow the frame's edge.
