A classic woodcut by M.C. Escher featuring a geometric tessellation of interlocking black and white birds.
M.C. Escher, a Dutch graphic artist, produced this work as part of his systematic exploration of tessellation. The image demonstrates a periodic tiling of the plane, where identical bird shapes interlock without gaps or overlaps. Escher utilised the mathematical principles of geometry to create a seamless transition between the black and white figures.
This woodcut reflects the artist's fascination with symmetry and the division of space. By alternating the orientation of the birds, Escher creates a rhythmic pattern that draws the eye across the surface. The stark contrast between the black and white forms clarifies the geometric logic behind the composition. Each bird acts as a mirror image or rotation of its neighbour, demonstrating a precise control over form and negative space.
Escher often drew inspiration from his travels, particularly the Moorish tiles he observed at the Alhambra in Spain. These experiences encouraged him to move beyond traditional representational art toward the creation of abstract, repeating patterns. This specific work is a clear example of his ability to merge rigorous mathematical calculation with artistic expression. The birds are stylised, focusing on the silhouette and the way they fit together rather than anatomical realism. The result is a visual puzzle that invites the viewer to analyse the underlying structure of the design. This print is a representative example of his mid-career output, during which he refined his techniques in woodcut and lithography to explore the infinite nature of the plane.
