Georgia O'Keeffe produced this work in 1936, capturing the distinct geography of New Mexico. The composition features the rounded, sun-baked red hills of the Ghost Ranch area in the foreground, which contrast with the distant, flat-topped silhouette of Cerro Pedernal. O'Keeffe maintained a long fascination with this mountain, often painting it from various angles and distances throughout her career.
