A 1863 woodblock print by Ichiryūsai Yoshitoyo depicting an elephant, a subject of great curiosity in Japan during the Bakumatsu period.
This woodblock print by Ichiryūsai Yoshitoyo, dating from 1863, captures a moment of fascination during the Bakumatsu period in Japan. As the country began to open its ports to international trade, the arrival of exotic animals and foreign visitors became a subject of intense public curiosity. This genre of art, known as Yokohama-e, documented these encounters with a blend of observation and imaginative interpretation.
The composition features a large elephant as the central subject, rendered with a focus on its physical mass and texture. The animal is depicted consuming straw, while figures in Western-style dress stand nearby. The inclusion of these figures, dressed in mid-19th-century European attire, provides a visual record of the cultural exchange occurring at the time. The print is a diptych, a common format for such subjects, allowing for a wider view of the scene.
Yoshitoyo employs the traditional woodblock techniques of the Ukiyo-e school, using clear outlines and flat areas of colour. The palette is balanced, with the dark, muted tones of the elephant contrasting against the lighter, more saturated colours of the clothing and the green ground. The text included in the upper portion of the print provides contemporary context, likely describing the origin of the animal and the circumstances of its arrival. This work offers a glimpse into the Japanese perspective on the influx of foreign influence during a period of rapid social change. It is a piece of historical documentation that reflects the curiosity of the era, rather than a purely aesthetic exercise. The print remains a clear example of how artists of the time processed the arrival of the unfamiliar through the established visual language of the woodblock medium.
