A detailed ink and wash study by Kawanabe Kyōsai, depicting two rats exploring a gourd vine with a bird overhead.
Kawanabe Kyōsai was a prolific artist of the late Edo and early Meiji periods, known for his technical skill and his ability to blend traditional Japanese ink painting with a satirical, often irreverent, sensibility. This work, depicting rats interacting with a gourd, belongs to the kachō-ga tradition, which focuses on birds and flowers, yet it introduces a playful narrative element through the inclusion of the rodents.
The composition is balanced, with the large, hollowed-out gourd serving as the primary anchor for the scene. One rat sits atop the gourd, observing its surroundings, while another is partially hidden within the fruit, feeding on the seeds. Above them, a small bird is captured in mid-flight amidst the trailing vines and blossoms of the gourd plant. The use of ink wash creates a sense of depth and texture, particularly in the rendering of the fur and the coarse leaves of the plant.
Kyōsai’s brushwork is precise, demonstrating his training in the Kanō school, yet he maintains a sense of spontaneity. The muted palette, dominated by shades of grey, brown, and soft white, allows the viewer to focus on the interaction between the animals and their environment. The artist’s signature and seal are visible in the lower left corner, confirming his authorship. This piece reflects the artist's keen observation of the natural world, presented with a touch of whimsy that characterises much of his output. It is a fine example of the way Japanese artists of the nineteenth century could elevate humble subjects through masterful control of ink and composition.
