Georgia O'Keeffe painted this work during her residence at the Shelton Hotel in New York City. The subject is the American Radiator Building, a structure completed in 1924 by architects Raymond Hood and André Fouilhoux. O'Keeffe captures the building at night, focusing on the contrast between the dark mass of the architecture and the artificial illumination of the windows.

The composition is vertical, reflecting the upward thrust of the skyscraper. O'Keeffe employs a restricted palette, dominated by deep blacks and browns, which allows the white and yellow light from the windows to appear luminous.
