This work presents a quatrain composed and written by Emperor Lizong of the Southern Song Dynasty. Executed in ink on a circular silk fan format, the calligraphy reflects the refined aesthetic standards of the imperial court during the thirteenth century. The characters demonstrate a controlled, balanced hand, typical of the scholarly tradition where rulers were expected to possess high proficiency in the literary arts.
The poem describes the atmospheric conditions of West Lake in Hangzhou, a location of immense cultural importance to the Southern Song elite. The text captures the visual experience of snow clearing over the water, the stillness of the scene, and the presence of distant peaks. The circular composition, known as a fan painting or album leaf, was a popular medium for poetry and painting in the Song period. It allowed for intimate viewing experiences, often shared among scholars and officials.
Several red seals are visible on the silk, indicating the provenance and the history of the object within imperial collections.
